Fairy Tern — 23 birds were counted on
Johnston today & all but the one chick were
sitting in the casuarina trees northwest of the
Post Exchange. This is a sharp increase in
numbers over last survey June 29 when
only 9 were sighted. The population has
remained nearly constant over every month
of this year & this is the first instance it
has risen to such a number. The chick
which is beneath the ——save of the PX
building on a roofer is now older than 21
days & has lost most of its downy look.
Sand Island — Bulwer’s Petrel — a
young fulwais was found in the nest where
one of the parents had been banded as
642-01138. We assume the chick hatched today
or last night the adult bird was in the
nest. Today the adult was gone & the chick
was left alone. How long the adults stay
with the chick once it hatches is not known,
so we may be wrong in assuming the bird
