I saw a small Owl sitting upon the limb of an oak tree near the trail. I approached to within eight or ten feet of the bird without disturbing it. Soon after I threw a rock towards it when it vanished so suddenly that I failed to get a good view of its wings which I had desired to do. I think that the bird is referable to the bal Pigmy Owl as it had large longitudinal markings on its breast and abdomen. I saw a most peculiar bird yesterday. It was on a rock near the beach. The bird was quite tame and undoubtedly maritime in habits. It sent forth a strange croak or alarm note. In size it was somewhat less than a Gull and its color was sooty black only, as far as I could see.
