Spatula clypeata. The drake still remains about the same, although I noted this evening one barred feather in the upper tail coverts. The green of the head is slightly broken up now by lighter colored feathers or by green ones dropping out and showing the light bases of others. July 4, 1909. The drake Shoveller has some spotted and barred feathers appearing in his flanks in place of the rich cinnamon-colored feathers; it seems to me that more light-colored feathers are appearing in his head and neck also. July 18, 1909. The drake Shoveller is fast losing his white breast feathers, spotted and barred feathers of buffish and blackish color appearing in their place. His flank feathers continue to change. His head and upper neck show no great change yet, but look very shabby. July 25, 1909. The drake Shoveller is becoming more and more spotted and is fast flooring the white feathers of his breast.
