Spatula clypeata. January 29, 1909. Received two females of this species. March 18, 1909. The female Shoveller, which still remains alive, is in worn plumage, and does not partake of the beautiful feathering which the rest of my ducks now have. May 15, 1909. Six days ago I brought home a pair of these from Los BaƱos. Both were in high plumage. June 3, 1909. The drake Shoveller has some dark feathers coming in in the middle of the upper breast which is white. It seems to me that the spot has grown lately. Of the two females, the first one is in very worn plumage; while the second one looks fine and fresh in comparison. It must be a case of arrested moult with the first bird which is called "Edna". June 29, 1909.
