The drakes occasionally act after the manner
of the drake Mandarin, sitting in the water, sticking
the bill in the water a short distance, and then
apparently suddenly expelling the breath. This
is done with such force as to apparently move
the bird backwards a slight distance.
June 3, 1909.
A female of this species, which
I brought back with me on May 9 from
Los BaƱos is very dark-colored compared
to the other two which I have. She is
very shy and keeps in the under-
growth most of the time.
The best looking and healthiest of
the three females picks at her feathers
all very often, and I see down sticking
to her feathers.
July 4, 1909.
The female teal Sacque shows quite a loss
of feathers, especially about the head. The drakes
seem to show no change so far,

No change in the teal so far.
