Nettium carolinense. May 21, 1909 The drakes occasionally act after the manner of the drake Mandarin, sitting in the water, sticking the bill in the water a short distance, and then apparently suddenly expelling the breath. This is done with such force as to apparently move the bird backwards a slight distance. June 3, 1909. A female of this species, which I brought back with me on May 9 from Los BaƱos is very dark-colored compared to the other two which I have. She is very shy and keeps in the under- growth most of the time. The best looking and healthiest of the three females picks at her feathers all very often, and I see down sticking to her feathers. July 4, 1909. The female teal Sacque shows quite a loss of feathers, especially about the head. The drakes seem to show no change so far, July 18, 1909. No change in the teal so far.
