later when on the ferry boat two loons passed
us westbound; apparently they were the same
two.
A number of Larus glaucescens and one
or two Larus californicus followed the
steamer, swinging across our wake in
graceful curves, then flying up along
side of the steamer.
San Francisco (Ferry Building); 5 P. M.
About the Slip this evening were a num-
ber of immature Larus glaucescens. A couple
alighted on the forward deck, remaining
there several minutes.
When on the east side of the bay a loon
passed in front of us high in the air and
southward bound.

Alameda to San Francisco, California.
Along the mole and seawall ducks were a-
bundant at a distance on the water. Off the seawall
I saw two cormorants high in the air westbound. Five
crossed the mole high in the air, going in a
northwesterly direction.
On the bay gulls were not very much m evi-
dence this morning. Two or three of both Larus cali-
ifornicus and Larus glaucescens followed us
off and on. A young one of the latter spent about
half the time on top of the ball of one of the flagpoles,
where it had considerable difficulty in maintaining
