the two common species were noted the same as usual of
the bay, an occasional Larus glauciscens (young)
riding on a flagstaff, although with considerable
discomfort.

Alameda to and from San Francisco, boat.
Conditions: - Overcast; cool; usual time; no wind to
speak of; rained in afternoon.
In the morning several large flocks of
ducks were seen on the water south of the mole,
probably numbering several hundred altogether.
An adult Larus californicus was seen flying
eastward. Drove inside the steamer.
In the evening a good many immature Larus glauciscens and one or two immature Larus californicus were seen on the
piles at the Ferry Bldg. Some of the former
had quite distinct whitish heads. A flock of
adult Larus californicus and Larus canus or
Larus brachyrhynchus flew by a couple of
times and finally many of the latter stopped
to pick up some refuse from the water.
Few gulls came about the bows of the steam-
er on the way over. East of Goat Island
several loons passed singly to the
southward at not a very great elevation.
Three or four ducks also passed in the
same direction. A few ducks & 2 Ardea herod-
