south and four north. East of Goat Island I saw a dozen
southward bound. Before me reached the mole a
Cormorant flew over the bldg. going south. Two Larus
philadelphia were seen flying separately near mole.
Along the mole on the great expanse of sand a few
ducks and gulls were seen near the water's edge, while I saw
what looked to be two Scamp Ducks on the water, also one
or two gulls and several small gobs, five hunched together.
Jan. 2, 1908.
Alameda to San Francisco, Cal.
Conditions: - bleak; moderate temperature; no wind; 7:40 to
8:25 A.M.
Off the seawall between Fifth St. and West Alameda
Stations I saw a loon flying; some hunters were seen
but no birds on the water.
Off at a considerable distance from the mole I saw
two large flocks of ducks on the water, and in closer
a few straggling ducks, grebes, and gulls, and one or
two cormorants.
Several Larus glauciscens were sitting on the dome
of the mole where the boat comes under. Immature
and adult Larus californicus and Larus glauciscens
were noted all the way across, being commonest on
the San Francisco side, Larus glauciscens being
well in the majority. Several Larus canus or Larus
brachyrhynchus were on the water in front of the
Berry Building. The usual number of gulls,
nearly all Larus glauciscens, and mostly immature
birds, were seen on the piles and sheds.
