Vicinity of Alameda, Cal. (San Leandro Bay).
Conditions:— Forenoon; clear; 5:30 A.M. to 9:30 A.M.;
slight breeze only at 9:30 A.M.; moderate temperature.
Drove up San Leandro Slough and through
the cut-off & Damon's, and down Damon's
home. The following birds were observed:
Larus — Three large immature gulls flew over-
head high in the air when I was at the mouth
of San Leandro Slough; they headed westward again, however.
Larus philadelphia. An immature one came
about the boat when at the mouth of San Leandro Slough.
Ducks. A flock of gadgeen flew over high in
the air, headed southward. Two birds came
two or three minutes later.
Rallus obsoletus. Quite a number about on
the mud close to the grass; feeding. In some
cases could approach within gunshot range.
I saw one bathing. About noon time one (ap-
parently adult) ran out of the yard west of
ours, and crossed the street, where it was
caught by some children as it was trying
to squeeze through a fence. I clipped its wings
