body pointed slightly upwards; the wing beats are
regular and somewhat rapid as well as short and
rather ducklike. Several young birds were
the only gulls seen; apparently Larus californicus.
In the evening a fine adult Larus occiden-
talis was observed near the Ferry Bldg, S.F.
A number of smaller gulls, Larus californicus
and Larus delawarensis (?) were seen.
No Larus heermanni were observed. No
gulls follow the steamers as yet.
Aug. 28, 1907.
Alameda to and from San Francisco, Cal.
Conditions: Moderate temperature; westerly wind; clear.
Along the mole and along the north side of the
seawall there were a good many gulls, mostly
adults. Those close by along the mole were Larus
californicus. Just as the train was turning into the
mole, I saw seven large shore birds, apparently cur-
lew, fly over the mole just over the train, although
quite high in the air.
On the bay in the morning gulls were not com-
on until we reached the San Francisco side.
Immature birds and adults, apparently Larus californicus
