78. Conditions:- During past six days, the same; moderate temperature; overcast in the forenoon, sometimes in the evening; NW wind, which comes up about 10:00 A. M. and blows until after sun- down. I have seen very few birds on the bay, an occasional Larus occidentalis and Larus heu- semani, and once in a while a lighter- warted smaller gull (probably Larus dela- warensis). A few Numenius hudsonicus have been noted on the strips of sand along near Fifth St. and in the right near the roundhouse. This morning I saw two Astragali on the telephone wire in the back yard. Yesterday morning I saw a Nycticorax nycticorax alight in small cottonwood tree in a neighbor's yard. After looking about two or three minutes with neck up - and outstretched it flew away. Late in the evenings they can be heard making a great din in the trees about High Street near Central and Santa Clara avenues. The trees are all
