Three, or four larger gulls were seen at a distance. One tern, probably Sterna forsteri, was seen near High St. Bridge. A Numenius hudsonicus was also observed standing on a dyke. Another flew by the boat. Three or four mornings ago I noted two Aphelocoma californica on the opposite side of the street, investigating a pile of leaves near the sidewalk and making remarks in the jay language at the same time. One or two Carpodacus mexicanus were also seen. Several Euphagus cyanocephalus and one or two swallows were observed to-day, the latter over the canal. A Sturnella magna was heard singing. The Passer domesticus nest in the backyard is completed and contained three eggs this morning. To my surprise, instead of finding an open nest, I found one completely covered like that of a Gospiza and also having a side entrance into which led a passageway
