ing. Along the mole were a few ducks, some being close enough to be distinguished as Scoup Ducks. In the evening Larus californicus and Larus glaucescens followed the steamer across. Many interesting immature plumages of the former species were observed. Several Larus philadelphia were observed on the San Francisco side, most of them being hooded. One flew quite close to the vessel among the other gulls when they were swooping down for something. Observed one of the large gulls carrying a crust of bread in its bill, and being pursued by several others. The crust was quite large and curled up over the bird's head. Noted a flock of twenty ducks on the San Francisco side flying NW quite high in the air in the afternoon. In the evening four or five gulls were noted flying westward along the mole.
