ornicus wattle about, flying with some difficulty
owing to the strong wind. I saw one alight for a
minute on the mud to pick up something. Both
adult and immature birds were seen.
The ducks are quite tame, several Aythya
valisneria and Aythya marila allowing us to
approach well within gunshot range in the
boat. When they rose, they flew quite close
by and would have made a fine shot had
she had a gun.

Alameda to and from San Francisco, cal.
Conditions: - Strong E wind; continual rain; warm.
Larus glaucescens and Larus californicus about
the steamer as usual.
Along the mole ducks were quite common. Aythya
valisneria, scaup ducks and Oidemia perspicillata
were riding the waves with ease. There were no
gulls on the sand near the roundhouse this
evening.
