Jan. 17, 1907.
Alameda to San Francisco, bal.
(sectors 7 2 or 3 golden eyes)
A few ducks along the mole this morning, also two or three
geese. Yesterday there was a flock of 300 or 400 on the water.
Off the seawall this morning there were a great
many small gulls (Larus philadelphia (?)) fishing;
they were flying very close to the water and often dropping
down to it. I saw two on the water off the light house.
Larus glaucescens was observed following the
steamers, with an occasional Larus californicus; the
former species were mostly all immature birds.
I have noted a flock of 25 or so sandpipers on
the mud left twice by the tide at the roundhouse, the
last three morning.
Jan. 18, 1907.
Alameda to San Francisco, bal.
Conditions: - Salm; moderate temperature; 7:00-8:00 A.M.
Very few ducks along the seawall and mole.
Larus glaucescens and an occasional Larus
californicus were the only gulls seen. The former
species, in all stages, followed the steamers and
was sitting on the docks on the San Francisco
side.
Only three or four ducks were seen flying on the
bay. When crossing the ferry routes, they always
fly high.
A few days ago when at Gough Street I saw
three or four gulls flying over the city from the
ocean to the bay. It was in the morning.
