On the bay a few ducks were seen flying in both
northerly and southerly directions.
No gulls followed the steamer until close to
Goat Island, then Larus glaucescens came about
in small numbers; all young save one which had
blue mantle, but a spotted neck. Only two or three
Larus californicus were seen, and they near the city.
There were a good many immature Larus glauces-
cens sitting about on the piles at the ferry dept. in
San Francisco.

the mole.

Noted a Hylocichla guttata (same as no. 3696) feeding
on the ground in back yard this afternoon. It hopped
about only picking up bits occasionally.

I noted quite a number of immature Larus glau-
cescens standing on the piles this morning as the
steamer entered the slip.
