close to the mole. A small flock of sandpipers on mud near roundhouse. On the bay Larus glaucescens was very common. Not many Larus californicus were observed. Following the steamer. Several scoters were observed flying about. San Francisco to Oakland mole, bal. Conditions: - 3:20 to 3:35 P.M.; SE wind; overcast; cool. On the roofs of the docks in San Francisco were a great many gulls, mostly immature Larus glaucescens with most every kind of markings. I noted also several Larus argentatus and Larus californicus. On the trip across Larus glaucescens were flying about the steamer continually; an occasional Larus californicus was noted. Jan. 3, 1907. Alameda to San Francisco, bal. Conditions: - 7:30 to 8:30 A.M.; SE wind; overcast; moderate temperature. An Aphelocoma californica calling, on way to train. Only three or four birds on the water off the seawall. A large flock of 300 or 400 ducks was noted on the water off the old oil works. Two very large flocks along the mole. At the mole there were 40 or 50 gulls on the water. Larus glaucescens followed the boat across in good numbers; very few Larus californicus, however. Three or four scoters noted flying on the bay. Jan. 4, 1907. Alameda to San Francisco, bal.
