which when pursued dived continually, and when
coming up to get air, simply exposed its head only,
keeping the rest of the body submerged:
Outside Bay Farm Island Bridge I saw the follow-
ing birds:-
Colymbus auritus. One.
" nigricollis. Common.
Larus californicus. 3 or 4.
" philadelphia. A flock of about 40 off Union
Street. Young bird shot.
Terns. Probably Sterna forsteri. A few.
Oidemia deglandi. Common.
" perspicillata. A few. Shot young bird.
Ducks. Besides the above-mentioned species
other ducks were very common. Unapproachable.
Phalaenrocorax. One.

Alameda, cal. to San Francisco, cal. 7:00 A.M. to 8:00 A.M.
Conditions: Clear, light wind, not cold.
Larus californicus, Common. Larus delawarensis, a few.
This evening at about 5:30 P.M., I saw only a few gulls.
