Oct. 10, 1904.
Alameda to San Francisco, bal.
conditions: 7:00 to 8:00 A.M. Strong SE wind; overcast; moderate temperature.
Passer domesticus was in evidence.
On the sand near the roundhouse there were 300 or
400 gulls and a good many sandpipers. Just off the
mole I saw three jaegers going south: Larus delawarensis
and Larus californicus were quite abundant. I saw
about ten Larus heermanni. This last-named species
with the two above follow the steamers. Larus heermanni,
however, does not approach boldly as do the others,
particularly Larus delawarensis.
Two grebes flew by the boat. Jales saw a flock of about 20
ducks. They were all flying low over the water.
San Francisco to Alameda, bal.
5:15 to 5:35 P.M. Strong SE wind; very cloudy; moderate tem-
perature.
Larus californicus and Larus delawarensis were quite
common. I saw two Larus heermanni. Three grebes flew
up and alighted further on as the boat approached.
I saw one solitary Ardea herodias standing in the shel-
low water near the roundhouse.
