The atmosphere has been very smoky for the last two
days owing to large forest fires nearby.
I saw the following birds:- In town, Passer domesticus,
Along the mole:- Ardea herodias, a few; gulls about
200.
On the bay:- Larus occidentalis, a few; Larus californicus, common; Larus heermanni, a few.
It is very doubtful whether I saw any Rissa tridactyla the other day. There are gulls on the bay
other than the three above-named, but I do not know
what they are. Mr. Henshaw says some are Larus
delawarensis.
San Francisco to Alameda, Cal.
Conditions:- 5:45 to 6:15 P.M. Very smoky; hot.
The remarks made on the bay birds for the morning
apply also for the evening.
Near the vegetable gardens I saw a few Euphagus
cyanoccephalus.
