The atmosphere has been very smoky for the last two days owing to large forest fires nearby. I saw the following birds:- In town, Passer domesticus, Along the mole:- Ardea herodias, a few; gulls about 200. On the bay:- Larus occidentalis, a few; Larus californicus, common; Larus heermanni, a few. It is very doubtful whether I saw any Rissa tridactyla the other day. There are gulls on the bay other than the three above-named, but I do not know what they are. Mr. Henshaw says some are Larus delawarensis. San Francisco to Alameda, Cal. Conditions:- 5:45 to 6:15 P.M. Very smoky; hot. The remarks made on the bay birds for the morning apply also for the evening. Near the vegetable gardens I saw a few Euphagus cyanoccephalus. Sep. 9, 1904. San Leandro Bay, Alameda, po., Cal. Conditions:- 7:00 A.M. to 11:30 A.M. Warm; smoky, wet wind towards noon. Birds were remarkably scarce. The following were seen:- Icterus melanscens Three or four. Symphonia semipalmata. A few. Limosa fedoa. Thirteen. Crexetes occidentalis. Common.
