conditions:-Overcast; windy; moderate temperature.
I saw a humming bird in the back yard when I got up; it was engaged in sticking its long bill into the flowers of a tree mallow (davatera assurgentiflora). I think it was Calypte anna.
In the backyard was also a pair of Aphelocoma californica engaged in picking up food in a chrysanthemum bed. Regarding this species, I heard recently from a friend that they get into his hen-house during the day and suck the eggs.
Of course I saw a great many Passer domesticus in the yard and as I went up the street. Females are more abundant than males.
At the roundhouse I saw a small flock of young Larus occidentalis on a narrow strip of beach. On the bay I saw nodarua heermanni. I saw a couple of Uria troile on the water off Goat Island.

I saw considerable numbers of Larus occidentalis flying and also a good many on a strip of sand north of Oakland creek. I saw two Larus heermanni both in flight. This species has decreased very suddenly in numbers. Off Goat Island was one Uria troile on the water.
