Mareca americana. Drake. Obtained March 12, 1911.
April 7, 1912.
Same as a month ago. No change except wear. There
seem to be three old rectrices in the right hand side
of the tail. Had an opportunity to ascertain for a
certainty to-day.
May 5, 1916.
No change except wear. Bill pale blue with black
tip, black edges to nasal openings, and a narrow bit of
black at the base of the maxilla on each side. Still
calls as much as usual. Occasionally I have
seen him lifting his head up and down and
preening against the female preparatory to mounting her. She, however, did not encourage and
did not lay her head on the water as usual when
ducks copulate. I have never seen him mount her.
