Mareca americana. Drake. Obtained March 12, 1911. January 14, 1912. In high plumage except for worn primary coverts and worn rectrices, although some of these latter have been renewed, including the longer median rectrices. Tail coverts seem entirely renewed. Pale gray rump feathers are characteristic of high plumage. February 11, 1912. On a thorough close examination I see that this bird has two or three old worn rectrices and that the primary coverts of one wing are worn while those of the other are not. The worn ones are in the injured wing. I found two high-plumaged scapulars belonging to this bird on the ground. Head nowhere near as bright as in highest males seen. Cheeks are spotted and even the buff top of head has some spots. February 22, 1912. I picked up a unicolored (high-plumage) breast feather of this bird to-day that was quite worn, and had evidently been recently lost. March 18, 1912. vermiculated I saw one or two intercapulares of this bird on the water of the pond to-day. I believe it is about through moulting. Of the tail feathers, the second rectrix on one side and the third on the other seem to be old and worn, otherwise the tail looks as it should.
