1941.
January.
Continued rain. But I after heard
the Thrasher singing. On Jan. 8 I began
putting out seeds again. Some mammal
has been taking food at night as I haven't
been feeding as continuously. The Hermit
Thrush is eating the berries from Xmas
decorations. But the seeds immediately
attracted Juncos, Fox, Song Sparrows, Brown
and Spotted Towhees. Gulls everywhere [Stadium
Campus].
Jan. 9. One Brown Towhee is missing all
tail feathers. Titmouse gave Sweet-set call.
Jan. 10. Clear and warm as we drove to
Boulder Creek for the day. At The Alvarado
rain pools birds were very abundant-
Hundreds of Gulls, Shoveller Ducks, and
Sandpipers (both Least and Redbacks- not
cure of Weston), Coots. A few B.B. Plover
Jan. 11. Warm. Clear. Birds eager for food.
Thrasher singing.
Jan. 17. Thrasher has continued singing
and I hear the Titmouse, Vireo's Brew
and Song Sparrow occasionally.
I put part of a coconut on the feeding
branch and the Crested Jays came
almost immediately to it. They race
themselves and hammer at it to get
the meat. Other birds go to it occa-
sionally but they seem to prefer the seeds.
Jan. 18. Went to Santa Cruz and back. At
the pools near Alvarado we saw two
Burrowing Owls and hundreds of Coots.
