There have been no young jays near the house
yet and the old birds are very silent still.
I have heard the song of the jay twice this
past week.
July 22. We drove down to Boulder Creek in the
afternoon. We were told it was very hot
(95° in shade) yesterday. Fog came in at night.
July 23. About 11 a.m. we were on the West Cliff
Drive at Santa Cruz. Many Cliff Swallows
still feeding young in the nests on the cliffs.
Several Pigeon Guillemots flew in to nests or

three came into a cove farther up. On the
point there were also three more Black
Turnstones. Cool.
July 24. Fog morning and evening and along the shore,
probably all day — certainly in afternoon —
Grosbeaks, Thrushes, Vireos still about.
[illegible] sided Flycatcher gave both calls. I
think I heard an Ash-throated Flycatcher
both yesterday and today. Also a Martin.
Worked in garden. Cooler.
July 25. Drove home via Mt. View Marsh (no birds,

point at the west end of the bridge were two
Warq—Scoters, and 38-40 Willets. On the salt
pools at the east end were thousands of
