Dec. 25. Pouring rain most of the day. As I drove over To Lyon Rd. I heard many Song Sparrows (in different places) a Nuttall Sparrow and Robins singing. Dec. 26. Rain all day, can hear the gulls in the Stadium calling. Dec. 27. Still raining. Dec. 28. Rain and S.W. wind which just strikes the tops of the oaks trees. Robins seems to blow in as they seek shelter from the wind in the upper canyon. As I sit writing at my desk I hear constantly the notes of Varied Thrushes. Later (! 2 m) Robins continue to pour in and Varied Thrushes have come into the Logan tree under the window to eat the berries. Sometimes there are a dozen in the bush at once. This continued until two o'clock when I went upstairs to rest. At Two Thirty when I came down the berries were practically gone. Three birds were finishing them off. We heard a Sparrow Hawk calling, so stepped out to the porch to look at him. He was soaring in wide circles and calling frequently. Above him were many robins as high as we could see. A flock of brush tits was in the oak overhanging the porch and some came into the tips of the branches nearest me (3 ft.) When we closed the door they did not fly. Dec. 29. No wind, No rain to speak of. Cloudy most of the day. J.T.A. and I went to the Aquatic Park. I drew birds while he read. Many ducks. No male golden- eyes. Several Blue Herons and Ann Egrets. Sandp flying.
