1940 via Mt. View Marsh and Dumbarton Bridge. Tide was too far out but the whole marsh was covered with rain that many birds remained near the Bay Shore highway. Birds seen: Bb. Clover many, Long-billed Curlew 12-15; Hudsonian 2; Yellow- legs - one stood on a hummock of mud and yipped continuously. One of the Hudsonian Curlews was calling continuously from one spot also. Willets, several seen. Least, Red-backed & Western Sandpipers and Long-billed Curlews very abundant. Also Gadwalls at, Avocets 20t. At Dumbarton Bridge many Sandpipers and Clover at the west end (Tidal), 2 Western Grebes at the bridge; 200+ Gull Grebes, 400+ W. Pelicans, 300+ Ann. Egrets, Avocets 200+, Ducks (Shovelers) 150t, a few Buddies; Bonaparte Gulls and Forster's Terns (I had supposed the Terns were all gone.) Perhaps the absence of Pelicans and Grebes earlier this winter was because of the hunting season. Many pipits. Dec. 24. Still raining hard. I heard two Vigors' Wrens a Thrasher, and a Song Sparrow singing this morning (not raining at the time) and James heard a Varied Thrush. There were many gulls in the stadium. I watched one as it flew out. It spiraled 6-8 times before it was up high enough to fly over the top. Later the gulls were seen flying up the canyon. James said that football men came in to practice.
