From there we went to San Juan Capistrano - a beautiful
mission, gardens very gay. Many Cliff Swallows, es-
pecially in ruins of stone church (with transepts)
Saw no swifts.
June 17. We spent the day at Salos Verdes. Many Cliff
Swallows near the Lee's house. Mother in distance:
Humming birds (Anna)
June 18. We started the northward journey via New-
Luna; lunch at Bullton; detour to La Purisima -
a mission near Lompoc which has been
restored since our visit there in 193 .
A very interesting problem it has been: reproducing
all the things necessary for rebuilding; adobe
bricks, tile, doors, hinges, shutters, benches etc.
etc. Birds very abundant - esp. Cliff Swallows,

Grosbeak, Anna & humming birds, Ash Th. Flycatcher -
We visited the seed gardens - acres and acres;
Bulbears, Bodgers etc. Larkspurs, Calendulas,
sweet peas etc., etc. - most brilliant - Night at
Casa Robler.
June 19. At dawn a King bird; then a Bluebird; their linnets
goldfinches, Calif. Woodpeckers etc. We detoured
from King City via The Pinnacles to Hollister.
