Jan. 24 (contin.) On the bay There great numbers
of Lesser Scaup and Biddy Ducks. Visibility
was too poor to make out other birds.
The Sandlirling flew in while we were at the
pools. The Sandpipers were at the Ashby Ave. pool.
The Least Sandpipers were trunched together as close
as they could stand, asleep - on the mud. The Western
and Redbacks were near the KBE station. The Western
Gull was on the boom near the island. No doubt
there are many more on the bay shore. Bonaparte
Gulls were surprisingly abundant for midwinter.
Jan. 25. Heavy rain. Warm.
Jan. 26. Showers. When I went out between
Showers I noticed a flock of Pink Eiders
in the cals. Song Sparrow was singing.
I heard as Saw Brown, Spotted Towhee, Fox sp.
(Permit Thrush), R.e. [illegible], Calif Jay. Wren-tit,
Bull.Tits, between 37 Morewood and 73 Panoramic
Jan. 28. Boulder Creek. Heard W.W. Wren. Warm. Cloudy.
Jan. 29. Went to Palo Alto. At Dumbarton Bridge birds
were scarce in the morning - tide low, feeding
in the marshes. In the afternoon at high
tide they were crowded on certain clytes and
in certain pools. There were very few
Eared Grebes (30±) and we did not see the
allbirds. They were all during activity.
In Palo Alto I heard the spring song
of the Spotted Towhee. Many Titmouses
singing. Very few jays at bridge.
Warm.
