was a single Crow. But from Palindale on
birds were much more conspicuous (trp. bar.
Captain to German: Linnets, B's, Blackbirds, Spar.
Wheatears, Songlarks, Skylarks, Shrikes,
now Hawks etc.). At Lancaster we turned
west to German on the Grapevine Grade
and then on to Tulare for the night.
We had dinner at the Tulare Hotel where the
dining room walls are covered with framed
specimens collected by the owner (Whitlin?).
Jan. 17. High fog covered the whole valley and
became lower the further north we
drove so we lost the Los Banos road
intending to return via Tachies Pass
but the fog lifted on that side of the
Valley so we came up via Guatine to
Tracy where we had lunch. Then we
drove up into sunshine in Altamont
Pass and reached Berkeley before 3 p.m.
We found it clear with a little north
wind — not warm.
Jan. 24. Cloudy a.m., rainy p.m. The Lady Birds
went to An Aquatic Park. Found: Eared Grebes 4,
W. Grebes (Louday); Gulls: Bonaparte, many; Calif.
many; Ring-billed few, Glaucous-winged a few, mostly
imm.; Weddin (1); Ducks: Ruddy, Lesser Scaup
very ab., 1 ad. male Red-breasted Merganser, several
[illegible] Mallard,
Belted Kingfisher, a few W.W. Scoters, Canvas-backs 2,
Ann. Gull (eyes 15-20 ft.), or females
Far. Cormorants 20t; Ann. Egrets 3; Coots 2; Sander-
ling 150t; Least Sandp. 40t; Western Sandp. 50t;
Redbacks 10t; Meadowlarks, a large flock; a few Bar.
Blackbirds, Pipit, Song Sparrow, Linnets: 27 sp.
