1939. Dec 16. (cont.) Near Santa Clara, a Sparrow Hawk was on the ground beside the road. He flew away with a small bird in his talons. Dec. 18. Still Clear. No wind. Birds decreasing. Dec. 21. Still Clear. Colder but no frost. Our Hermit Thrush banged against the living room window when it jailed by another Hermit Thrush guarding the bayon berries below. Dec. 25. Light frost after rain. Black Phoebe S. Stadein Dec. 26. A little rain, Snow in mountains, Yesterday I put out a very large Sunflower head on an Oregon Holly wreath on the usual feeding branch. This morning the seeds were almost gone. Fox Sparrows as well as Calif. Jays and Titmouses ate them. Ht. Horned Owls have been calling at night. Probably a pair as one called in a low key, the other re- spoded almost immediately in a higher key. Mrs. Learner told me she saw a Red-breasted Sapsucker in Golden Creek. An Anna Humming bird was annoying it as it perched in a Eucalyptus tree. Warmer, Mary Anderson Warblers in shade trees at Ben- venue and Center. Dec. 27. Ht. Horned Owls very near last night. L.H. Saw one perched on a clothes reel at Panoramic above Orchard Lane (Miramont Lawn) and later on the roof of a house on Arden Rd. Cloudy, warm.
