1939. July 19. Beautiful weather. When we returned from dinner at 7:30 p.m. the birds east of the house were much excited. I found the cause of their excitement was a young Screetch Owl perched on the porch railing. He paid no attention to us while we looked at him from the garden but when we looked out through the dining room window he seemed to see us more clearly and flew away. Probably he was one of the owls raised in the flicker box. July 22. At Dumbarton Bridge the usual Caspian Terns, Avocets, Willets. Also a few Foster Terns - Both Least and Western Sandpipers had increased since last week. No Blackcaps. July 23. At Santa Cruz a Pigeon Guillemot brought a small reddish fish to its nesting hole.
