1939.
July 19. Beautiful weather. When we returned
from dinner at 7:30 p.m. the birds east
of the house were much excited. I found
the cause of their excitement was a young
Screetch Owl perched on the porch railing.
He paid no attention to us while we
looked at him from the garden but
when we looked out through the
dining room window he seemed to
see us more clearly and flew away.
Probably he was one of the owls raised
in the flicker box.
July 22. At Dumbarton Bridge the usual Caspian
Terns, Avocets, Willets. Also a few
Foster Terns - Both Least and Western
Sandpipers had increased since last
week.
No Blackcaps.
July 23. At Santa Cruz a Pigeon Guillemot
brought a small reddish fish to its
nesting hole. Cliff Scruballows decreasing.
Neumann Gulls increasing. Cues,
Wandering Tattler seen.
July 29 Dumbarton Bridge 11:45-12:55 Tide high.
[illegible] Grebes, 1 Am. Egret, 56t Willets,
25t Least Sandpipers, 25± W.-Sandpipers,
300± N. Phalaropes; Caspian Terns at.,
Young Avocets almost grown - heads soft grey,
necks dull reddish brown. One Scoter at west
end of bridge. Near the Trio Eared Grebes
