1939 To Boulder Creek & Santa Cruz. May 15, 16 Farallone Cormorants (?) Probably this species on Bird Rock and flying over water. Brandt Cormorants may have been there also. Too dark to make sure. Band Cormorants - Several flew by showing white flanks at Santa Cruz - Gt. Blue Heron - near Alvarado and at Dumbarton White-winged Scoter - two in surf. Also flocks of 4,7,50. (One flock of air, 3 W.W. 3 Surf. flying northward.) Surf Scoters - 6 in Surf. Also flocks - first of 40 flying quite high at first in V formation, then becoming confused, as the second flying as the first flock did then after becoming united, dropping gradually to the water where they alighted. Mallard (?) Near Alvarado a large duck with white tail flushed from under a RR bridge (R.R. obsolete) Buzzard - many seen in different places - Sparsus Hawk - one near Dumbarton, one over Big Trees, Quail - Boulder Creek and on way to S.Cruz. Coot - a few near Alvarado. Muledeer - a pair + a pair in Coyote Hills Slough Hudsonian Curlew - 4 at S.Cruz (2+2) Willetts - 2 groups at Dumbarton - 30? Red-backed Sandpipers - a few at Dumbarton Western Sandpipers - 100-200 Sanderling - three groups - perhaps 50 total at S.Cruz Avocets - 8 pairs at Dumbarton Bridge (salt pool)
