1939 Alum Rock Park
Mrs. Leavens reported Olive-sided Flycatcher
in Tilden Park. Golden-crowned Sparrow
still here but decreasing. No Gambel's heard.
April 26. The Lady Birds went to Alum
Rock Park for the day. Clear with
cool breeze. The first stop was between
Mt. Eden and Elvarado where we
noticed gulls following a tractor (one
Bonaparte (winter plumage)), several Glaucous-
winged, and many Calif. and Thighbills. With
them were 20-30 Hudsonian Curlews and
30-40 Black-bellied Plover in full plumage.
As we neared Alum Rock Canyon we
stopped among the sycamores and aspens
where a Black-headed Grosbeak was singing
an especially fine song with many
variations - Yellow Warblers, Orioles, White
Crown, Wood Peewee and finchlets were
seen and heard. Chipping Sparrows in
the orchards - Brian dry until we reached
the hills. We stopped where birds seemed
abundant and were rewarded with the song
of the Canyon Wren. A little protection of
rusty oil this stood near the road and
the wrens were evidently nesting in-
side. The head and back and lower adds -
were matched the rusty hue almost
exactly. But its white on the throat
and chest was very conspicuous.
