1939 Clear Lakes.
After lunch we drove on to Austin's and visited
our tiny lot. No developments. Flowers noticed
Annual Lupine, White Hemophilia, especially;
We went on to the Log Cabin, then had to start home.
Bird List. W. Gull ab.; White Pelican 20+; St. Blue Heron
Turkey Buzzards (7 in one group, flying); Sparrow Hawk,
Quail, White Piquetted Pheasant near Yountville;
Costa, Gulls (ap.?) on lake; Calif Woodpecker ab.; Lewis
Woodpecker (8-15); Flycher, Cliff Swallows (swarming
near bridge); Barn Swallow, one; Tree Swallow,
Violet Green Swallow; Calif Jay, W. Crow, Titmouse
Chickadee (on Mt. St. Helena); Shudder-tulled Mutter
Latch; 2 House Wren (Jean Middleton - first one this
spring); W. Bluebird, W. Quateatelier, Warbling
Vireo, Lutecient Warbler (Napa Valley); Audubon
Warbler, Yellow Warbler (heard near Austin);
Yellow-headed Blackbird, Redwinged Blackbird, Brewer
Blackbird, Sng. Sparrow, Calif. Purple Finch, Leiniet,
Willow and Green-backed Goldfinch, Brown Thorpe-
Juncs, Chipping Sparrow ab.; Purget-Ed.; Gambel
and G.t. Sparrows, Doug Sparrows. 44 Species.
On the return trip we took the Silverado Trail
from Calistoga to Napa - very beautiful.
April 7. While watering the garden I saw a Western
Winter Wren in the oak branches (of tree cut
down to make room for the garage.) Night singing
Fox Sparrow still here. No dawn songs.
At 4 p.m. we drove to Boulder Creek -
stopping at 6 p.m. at Mt. View Marsh -
