1939. Mar. 26 (contin) way of Palo Alto as stopped a few minutes at Mt. View Marsh. The tide was just coming in as a comparison of numbers of birds present was not representative. The Curlews there (12-14) were almost all Longbills (comp. Woodlanding Mar. 24) Several Bb. Plover were in full plumage. Two small Yellowlegs kept together constantly and one was much darker on the wings than the other; Sandpipers were mostly Western. No Dotterels, Avocets. Only a few Godwits. At Dumbarton Bridge the usual Eared Grebes and Spotted Ducks, often feeding Together in a close bunch. Too dark to see if the Grebes were changing into breeding plumage. Only two or three Cliff Swallows. Rain in spots on the way home. Mar. 27. Allen Dummer The "Chat Club" went to Lake Merced and Golden Gate Park. Clear. Wind from ocean strong and cold, esp. at Lake Merced. Warmer in park. List: 1, 2, 3 Western, Eared and Pied-billed Grebes Some of the Eared Grebes were in almost complete breeding plumage- with the eye flame colored - very striking.
