1939 Carmel
March 20, between showers - in Strawberry Canyon. The Chat Club spent the morning
9:30-11:30 a.m. walking from the Stadium
Runway via Canyon Rd. to the fork in the
roads below the Botanical Gardens, re-
turning by the U.C. Dairy. Birds seen or heard:
Hawk (Sparrow?), Calif. Quail, Flicker, Black-
Chesbe, Coast Jayab., Calif. Jayab., Titmouse,
Bush-tito (pro), Wren-at singing, Vireo Wen singing,
Hermit Thrush (only one), Robin, Varied Thrush heard,
B-c Knight ab. singing, Lutescent Warbler (8 singing
at different places), Calif. Purple Finch, ab. singing,
Luniel (heard), Spotted Towhee, Brown Towhee, Fox Sparrow
juncos (singing), T-c Sparrow singing, Song Sparrow singing
24 Species.
One Spotted Towhee on the hillside above the dairy
was singing an unrecognizable song - Chee,
Chee, Chee, Chee. There was no suggestion
of Towhee quality. I think it was very
similar to the song I heard at Boulder Creek
several years ago.
March 21-23 - Almost continuously Cloudy but
very little rain.
March 24-25. The Lady Birds went to Carmel
where we spent the night with Dorothy Clarks
and Dorothy Sheldon. Cloudy most of the Time
with some rain. On the way down sunshine
at Hecker Pass (one stop), and Moss Landing where
we dined. Birds at Moss Landing were very abundant
and interesting and the light excellent.
