1938
jan. 26 Lady Birds went to Contra Costa Co.
Clear but a cool or chilly breeze. (2). At
San Pablo Reservoir we found about 30
Ruy-necked Ducks, 50 Geese (Hatchins?),
a few Mallards (4), 1 female Merganser
and a few Rared Grebes. The Merganser
swam just under the surface of the water.
The geese were on the water part of the time
but later flew to a grassy slope to feed.
Many coots. Below the dam we took the
first road to the north and had our
lunch in a sunny spot where a Vigor's
Wren was singing. Heard a Townsend Warbler.
After lunch we continued toward Martinez,
but just before reaching the town turned
forward Walnut Creek, then through Pelley
Valley to the main highway. One stop
at a pasture in a valley where there were
orchards - many Aud. Warblers - and on
the hillsides swallows and towhees heavy with
berries. Great numbers of Robin's, Titmouse,
Kinglets and Yo. Goldfinches. One large bird
flies which suggested an Anthroop Green Heron.
Before returning to Berkeley we visited the
Nabersand Bee Ranch on Tyee Creek where we
found a Mocking Bird, Sapsucker, Nuttall Wood-
pecker, Bluebirds, White-crowned Sparrows, along
the road: Quail, Madrobirds, Bluebirds, Shrikes,
Jays (Calif. Coast), No hummingbirds or Bushtits.
Many Sparrow Hawks, one Cooper's, several Redtails.
Beautiful day, beautiful drive.
