Jan. 15. Heavy tule fog filled the whole valley as
far as Saratoga, and from there over the
mountains clouds were thick. We stayed
for lunch at the cottage, and returned
in the afternoon. I saw Varied Thrushes
and heard a large flock of mistle thrushes on the
places; skunkwise birds were just - berries
gone. On the way home we took the
Sweet road. On each side of Dublin
I saw huge flocks of crowned sparrows
by the roadside.
Jan. 16. Clear and warm again.
Jan 17. Song Sparrows are singing again. Many
juncos come for food and robins are nu-
murous; sometimes come to battle.
Jan. 19. I walked down to Telegraph Ave and
Mrs. Kelly I noticed song sparrows in full song
reported at in several places. In each case two
two birds were within hearing of each
other, each apparently holding his
own territory. Jan. 20 Colder, Cloudy

leaf buds on the dogwoods we brought down
from Alta. Nov. 6. On the way home
