Poor Will on Sand Hill Rd. but below
the Summit on the San Lorenzo's Side - Very
shy. This occurs much shield once -
Light shrunk eye as we came around curve,
But flew instantly. Saw a Great Horned
Owl perched at top of a low tree on top
of ridge at dusk - Silhouetted against sky.
At Dumbarton Bridge a number of
Caspian Terns and a few hundred
N. Phalaropes. Cooler.
May 23. Cool. Chilly in Berkeley.
May 24, 25. Annual meeting of C.O.C. Chilly.
May 26. Warmer.
May 27. Left at 3 p.m. for Tahoe. Turtle river route
via Antioch Bridge. Principal birds: Brewer
and Red-winged Black birds, Crow's Horned Larks. Spent
night at Colfax.
May 28. Only bird heard at dawn was Robin. Just before
we left Colfax a flock of 3,400 sheep were driven
through on way to Tracy. Followed a balwin wagon
through the flock. Drove slowly and stopped often. Beautiful
day. Reached Rainbow Tavern at 10:30 a.m. (near Cied) and
remained for lunch. Found nest of water ouzel on supports
of bridge. Saw ouzel once. Reached cottage at 4 p.m. Dinner
with Mrs. Hamlin. Birds seen or heard on way:
Colfax to 3000 ft elevation: Robin, Cassin's Vireo, Black
throated Grey Warbler (or Hermit?), Cliff Swallow, Yellow W.,
W. Tanager, Wood Pewee, Grobroke.
3000 ft. to Baxter's: Warbling Vireo, Hermit W. Mourning Dove.
Baxter's: Junco, Fox Sparrow (Dogwood, Silver Fir, Deer Brush[?])
