Kingfishers (2) Fishing). In a large cypress tree at a bend in the lagoon on the east side of the highway bridge were many large birds perched. Those in the lower part of the tree seemed to be Black-crowned Night Herons (one in full plumage) above and silhouetted against the sky were many cormorants, increased by numbers which flew up from the lagoon. May have been a few St. Blue Herons also (could not be sure). Counted forty birds and there were increased by those flying up later Northwest of the bridge on the tidal flats were many Willets (50+) and Godwits (20+) A man from Santa Cruz below was bringing in his boats told me the ducks had been holding out fairly well - said he could have got 50 Bluebills that day - they stayed in the lagoon, so could be taken more easily than sprig or widgeon which go out on the ocean if calm and stay till Starts - Dec. 30 - last hunting day for season (Sat. & Sun. for two months). Rain into rain at Santa Cruz; got stuck in mud near cottage (top of road), got into dense cloud on summit, heavy rain to Saratoga where we spent night. Dec. 30. Rain all night. Earthquake at 5:55 a.m. Clear on way home and all day.
