Flycatcher and Gorbear, singing during
Commencement Exercises (Graduate St.)
May 19. Thrasher singing after Cong silence.
Tolmie warblers still singing at end of
Wawood Rd. Commencement.
In afternoon drove to S. F. and down
Skyline Boulevard, then down thru'
Belmont to Meeks Park where we called
on Mrs. Buck. Dinner at Saratoga Inn
and thin to Boulder Creek. Beautiful warnday.
May 20. Birds very abundant, much more so than
last spring. Grosbeak first bird to sing at dawn.
Then Varnish (R.b.) Warbling Vireos, Yellow
and Black-throated Gray Warblers and Paruline birds
later. A Tanager and Chat sang during
the morning. Woodpeckers very active and
giving unusual high pitched calls as they
flew high from tree to tree. Very warm.
May 21. Crew of workmen came up R.P. track with
derrick to remove tracks and begin removing
bridge. Hot in middle of day. Chickadees
in family group. Saw a female Black-
throated Gray Warbler on ground near back door.
It made no sound but hopped along the ground
advancing slowly toward the shaded spot under
the group of redwoods. It flew into the redwood
but I could not follow it as I had no glasses
on. Later a gnome on the ground sang a
very sweet finch-like whisper song as it
hopped along on the ground. A female Lutecent
Warbler came frequently into the Spineless bush
near the electric pole, took worm, fled to room.
