147 July 12. Returned from Greece. From Train saw flock of 20+ Sandpipers near Suisun, Tallies near S. Pablo July 13. I heard a bird song similar to but not exactly like that of a Purple Finch. It has the accent and slowness of a Vireo's song but the quality of a purple finch, but too subdued. No call notes were given. After listening some time, I discovered it was a thrasher imitating the finch. Spotted Towhee sang at dawn continuously. Song Sparrows and robins were heard. July 14. Lois told me she frequently heard queen notes from the flicker's box near her windows. We found a Screech Owl nesting in it. July 15. When working in the yard. July 16. We went to Boulder Creek where we found everything in excellent condition. The new garden bed in front of the porch was filled with flowers, gilia, nemisia, growing primroses, Calif. poppies. No signs of gophers - a gopher snake about? July 17. I heard a Laniager early in the morning and later saw an adult male in the Landrums orchard. I heard either a Laniager or robin singing as I drove through Ben Lowond yesterday. I heard the Pygmy Owl. Thrushes calling, no song
