Jan. 1. Rain. 4 in. snow on Diabls.
Jan. 2. Rain. Heavy snow in Sierras -
Jan. 3. Clear. Snow on Mt. Hamilton Range -
Drove to Boulder Creek and back via Dunbarion
Bridge. No Stop but saw many Sandpipers, Eared
Grebes and in distance Willets, a few B.B. Plover
and too far away to identify rafts of brown
birds which were probably Godwits. Tide low -
Caught many glimpses of Clapper Rails. On the
way back, many Am. Egrets, 1 Snoring Egret,
Blue Herons and in distance a few W. Pelicans.
Not more than half a dozen ducks seen.
At Boulder Creek birds were concentrated in
the sunny side of the valley, especially
in the Huntington Place where there were Stone
asters and the remains of an old vegetable
garden. At dawn alarm note from a Brown
Porche, caused about two hundred birds flew
up from the ground - mostly juncos and G.C.
Sparrows. In the trees there were chickadees,
W. Bluebirds, Cedar Waxwings and a few R.-C.
Chinselets. Heard a Warbler (Louis saw a bird with
much yellow) just. Thousands Warblers and
saw a flock of Willow Goldfinches and several
Hermit Thrushes.
Jan. 4. Heavy frost in early morning. Clear.
Jan. 6. Cold. N. Wind. Clear. Hermit Th. took bath at 5 pm.
Jan. 7. Very cold. Ice on bird pools all day. 27°
Jan. 8. " " " " " 27°
Jan. 9. Still cold. Winds died down. Becoming cloudy.
At 7:30 a Hermit Thrush sang repeatedly Song
Sparrows once.
