Boulder Creek.
June.
Young bird with red crown had its head
out of hole, called constantly, giving
single notes and also rattle.
Have heard the bird that sings be-
fore dawn every morning. Began
this a.m. at 3:40. Sang without
once stopping till 4:20 - rhythmic
but not a melody - the note low
pitched and of rich quality - "turn
to to turn turn to turn" - repeats
over and over. Screech Owl, W.
Flycatcher and Rooster called between
3:40 and 4:20. At 4:20 other birds
began - S.p. Towhee, Thrush, Grosbeak,
Olive-sided F., Black-thr. Gray W., etc. Song
of unknown bird not heard after 4:30 a.m.
Purple Finch near here has a remarkable
song, very varied and three times as
long as the typical song - with variations
like Green t. Goldfinch but richer tones.
W. Flyc. often calls during night. Nest on
support of roof at back of Cottage [illegible])
June 20. Noticed at noon that Allen H. was

Found nest broken away from support
at bottom. Two babies still inside and
