July 29(?). Heard call early dawn - three explosive raven whistles
repeated after interim. J. E. suggests Marbled Murrelet. Major Brooks
strides Long-ebbed Creek.
July 31. Returned to Berkeley.
Aug. 5. At 10 p.m., as I stood on Mosswood Road, I
heard the notes of shore birds in the air
above - double whistled note - not like
Black-tailed Gull? Curlew - Notes continued about five
minutes then ceased. If they were
flying directly the flock must have
been large. If rising in spirals
as gulls do in migration, perhaps a
smaller flock. The former supposition
seems more reasonable. In Oakland Cemetery
saw a family of very small quail (weeks old?)
Aug. 6. Dogs have made many paths
through woods. Birds shy. Song Sparrow
at drinking fountain has only half a tail.
Young San Francisco Tarhees with parents,
still spotted. Pileated Warbler heard, House Wren.
Aug. 8. Two Thrasher singing at dawn.
Aug. 9. Black headed Grosbeak near
house calling and singing in snatches
soft voice. Anna's Hummingbird about garden
most of time - Liri's Tongue in full bloom.
Aug. 11. San Francisco Tarhees giving Three-diddle Song
