Pomona, June 1917. (123°)
June 14. Went out to Pomona. Burning lot 110°.
Drove to Cucamonga in P.M. Must have been
120°. Met thro orange packing house -
Very interesting. Oranges washed, brushed,
dried, sorted, graded, wrapped and
packed without being touched by
the human hand. Last two done
by hand but protected by paper from
touch. All the rest by machinery -
June 15. 16. Two parties with thermometer
still up to 110° and up. Young oranges
killed and walnuts withered.
June 17. Rose at 4:30; went out to Ganesha
Park with Mrs. Bertha Anthony. Saw
35 species - Ark. Kingbird with nest on
Telegraph pole exposed to broiling sun.
Sparrow Hawks feeding young in
tops of Eucalypti, Hooded Orioles singing,
Anthony Towhee, Palled Wren's, Ash Throated
Fly catcher, Willow Goldfinch, Cactus Wrens
