Summit, July 1917.
Saw Williamson Sapsucker, Black-headed Grosbeak, and
a Pine Grosbeak which was singing. Heard Nuthatch,
Hermit Thrush. Thunder shower circled about us
in late afternoon:
Flock of birds feeding in Tamaracks across
stream from camp - Fly high in flock, calling
constantly "Keep, keep, Keep, Keep". Light
in tops of trees, become silent as they fall to
work. Balance themselves on ends of branches,
sometimes hanging upside down, extract
seeds (apparently) from cone, and fly with it
to stronger branch where they get out the kernel,
dropping husks to ground. After a few minutes
they begin to call and fly to another tree
near by or take their departure - Color largely
red, - I suspect they are Crossbills.
Aug. 2. Flock of 20 Crossbills (?) flew over, calling.
Calls answered by others feeding in trees near camp -
Aug. 3. Little Brown Creeper visited camp & sang at dawn.
Next up to hotel at 7 A.M. for breakfast. Many birds fleeting.
