Berkeley, July 1917.
Sunniest.
July 17. Brown Towhee came while I was
watering from East Porch. Flew on to
rising, then to porch floor where I used to keep bird
seed. Repeated action. I put out seed and two
Towhees came immediately to feed. Has put out
no seed for two months.
July 21. Went to Summit. Reached Summit about
7:30 P.M. Shook out sleeping bags and slept
under stars.
July 22. Made camp on edge of meadow just below
Forest reserve tract. Spring of ice cold water
near. Also stream of water for other purposes
except drinking. Saw following birds during course of
day- Spotted Sandpiper, Sparrow Hawk, Cooper? H.
Calliope H., Bie Nighthawk, Olive-sided Flycatcher,
H. Wood Pewee (abundant), Clarke Crow (heard), Cassin Purple
Finch (abundant), Ash. Goldy., Pine Siskin, Thick-billed Sparrow
Mt. White-cr. E.g., Seewa James, Clipping E.g., Mt. Song E.g. (heard),
Black-headed Grosbeak, W. Tanager, Warb Vires Cassin Vires,
Tolume Warbler, Audubon Warbler (young full grown)
