4. A rid hill region along rail- road and in vicinity of "five trail." Typical vegetation, huckle-berry and manzanita. Very few birds were seen in this region. Purple finch heard near "five trail." The note of the wren-tit was very much in evidence. Annotated list of birds seen. 1. Uria troille californica - California murre, or guillemot, 12-15 seen on Bay in flight, swimming and diving. Fly close to water, with very rapid beating of wings. In flight, neck con- spicuously long. Color slaty or blackish. 2. Larus occidentalis - Western gull - seen in great numbers on bay; 10-15 followed ferry boat on lookout for food. Some observed swimming. 3. Larus heermanni - on bay - only 4 or 5 seen. Distinguished from #2 by darker mantle, wings, under- parts and conspicuously red bill.
